5 AM Magazine is a national poetry magazine produced on newsprint that is published biannually. While certain elements, such as the font and page size, were standard for each issue, the layout was always a challenging one because of the variety of content. The poems all had different line lengths and word counts, effectively producing many different shapes that all needed to fit on a set amount of real estate. It was like trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle. Symmetry and white space were consistently important in the layout.
