For this text I based the display font of the chapter titles and drop caps off of Toneko's own handwriting. I thought the handwriting lent a touch of whimsy to the book, and reminds the reader that this is the story of a young girl, told through her own words. I italicized her diary entries in the text to give them a feeling of being handwritten without becoming illegible. I also decided to put transcriptions of radio broadcasts and official military correspondence in American Typewriter, to make those texts visually distinct from the main story, and also as a callback to the time period. Photos were included in a glossy insert.
