For this collection, I drew the icons and colored them with a large watercolor brush. I then traced over them with a pointed pen to give more definition. For the face cards, I used Bicycle face card images, scaled them and made them two-toned in Photoshop, to create a woodcut look. In contrasting colors I added words to each of the cards. I then coated the cards with a matte varnish. I put a lot of research into the words I chose. They are either quotes or expressions that relate to the suit or card number, or they are nicknames that gamblers use for that specific card. Many of the club cards are names of famous jazz clubs or speakeasies. This collection was created with watercolor, gouache, and ink on watercolor paper.
